What does it mean to be license-exempt?

In Colorado, there are three types of child care situations that do not require a license or are “license-exempt”. License-exempt child care includes care provided by a family member, friend or neighbor. Nanny shares or other informal care arrangements that families may use are also required to follow child care rules for license-exempt programs.

The three types of allowable license-exempt child care situations include:

  1. Someone who provides occasional child care that has no pattern

  2. Someone who cares for siblings from one family not related to the caregiver in addition to the caregiver’s own children.

  3. Someone who regularly watches no more than four children who are not related to the caregiver, with no more than two children under the age of two
